| THE official organization
for artists in China. If a painter is a member of the CAA, he is listed at the
national level; membership of provincial branches of the CAA means he is
listed at the provincial level, etc. A provincial membership or above implies
formal training, years of practice, tremendous effort and extraordinary talent
on the painter's part. On top of all that, he has to to go through a number of
competitions and exhibitions before he qualifies.
No amateur that is.
There are other commercial and private
associations with glamorous names and titles. But people like Kam, who is not a painter at all, can
pay a little sponsorship and become a member of such associations right away. When
it comes to collecting Chinese paintings, CAA members' work is a good
investment.
